Public Art Bureau of the Ville de Montréal

Since 1989, the Bureau d’art public has been responsible for managing the municipal public art collection. Today, the collection includes some 360 works of art, the oldest dating back to 1809, which are integrated into public spaces and municipal buildings (libraries, cultural centres, sports centers, etc.).
The Bureau d’art public team is made up of specialists in art history and restoration. These professionals implement the Bureau’s mission, which is based on a three-pronged approach.

Acquisition

Works of art are acquired with a focus on contemporary artistic practices, through competitions, invitations and public notices, aimed at professional artists. Donations also enrich the collection.

Conservation

From regular maintenance to restoration work, the aim of conservation activities is to maintain the integrity of the works, while respecting the artists’ intentions.

Enhancement

The works in the collection are disseminated by a variety of means, from publications to cultural mediation activities.

All these activities are carried out in collaboration with professionals from municipal and borough departments, as well as governmental and private partners.
