Artwork description
MOTHER AND CHILD
The title has been interpreted in the plural – mothers and children. Instead of seeing the mother and child as two entities, a sort of icon freezing a mother and her child into a static relationship, the artist wanted to show a multi-generational dynamic. From childhood to adulthood, passing through pregnancy, motherhood and finally into grand-motherhood. The characters are surrounded by blue as a matrix of air and water without horizon. The two hemispheres are represented as two vessels whose interior is warm and the outside is green and fertile. It is the matrix of humanity. The oars are metaphors for the effort to move, advance, progress in life. The 100 squares are a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center.
