Multidisciplinary artist Catherine Sylvain creates artworks that question our relationship with the world. Point d’origine is her third integration of art with architecture project, after those for the Grands-Vents elementary school, in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, and the Memphrémagog regional sports centre, in Magog. Solo exhibitions include Galerie Horace (Sherbrooke, 2006), Expression, centre d’exposition de Saint-Hyacinthe (2005), and the CIRCA exhibition centre (Montréal, 2004). In group exhibitions, her work has appeared at the Liverpool Biennale (2010) and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2008). Educated at Université Laval (BFA, 1999) and Concordia University (MFA, 2003), Sylvain teaches visual arts at CÉGEP de Saint-Hyacinthe.

Created by artist Catherine Sylvain as part of the station’s accessibility improvements, the sculpture *Relier* commemorates the significant contribution of the employees of the Bureau de transport métropolitain to the expansion of the Montreal metro. The work depicts a handshake transforming into a long vertical loop, evoking the route of a metro line.
Catherine Sylvain’s artistic approach aims to better understand the elements that shape and transform human beings and their relationships throughout their lives. This exploration leads to the creation of works featuring bodies or parts of bodies.
This is the 92nd work of art to be installed throughout the metro network. This spring, it will also be the subject of a short video by La Fabrique culturelle to highlight the artist’s work and her approach. This marks the second partnership between the STM and La Fabrique culturelle, which has already produced another short video aimed at introducing viewers to the works of art that enrich Montreal’s metro stations.
“The metro is a true art gallery, recognized worldwide. Artworks have been installed in most of the network’s 68 stations, much to the delight of Montrealers. *Relier* is the first artwork at Préfontaine station and is a beautiful addition to the metro’s collection,” said Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM’s Board of Directors.
“The STM is very proud to showcase the work of artists like Catherine Sylvain in its facilities, particularly through competitions that promote diversity and make public art accessible to our customers,” added Acting Executive Director Marie-Claude Léonard.
It should be noted that Préfontaine station has been undergoing renovations since September 2019, notably to install elevators, which have been in service since last November. The artwork was therefore created as part of the Policy on the Integration of Art into Architecture (the 1% policy).
