Hélèna Martel

Helena Martel is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist living in Montreal.
Her career as a mental health social worker inspires her artistic practice, allowing her to ground herself in socially engaged art. Her practice revolves around painting and drawing, which she uses to bring to light and highlight realities that are often rendered invisible and silenced. She draws on her lived experiences—both personal and professional—to explore the paradoxes and complexities that can coexist within individuals and in society as a whole. For the past four years, she has also been exploring mural art, addressing themes of human dignity and community well-being. She is currently working on the themes of aging and agriculture, which are intimately linked to intergenerational collective knowledge. She strives to infuse her art with a sense of care, aiming to give visibility to realities that are underrepresented in our public spaces. Through her practice, she has participated in numerous mural festivals in various parts of the world, including Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
