Mémoire d’un paysage
2019
Gingras Miki, Dionne Patrick

Through the medium of photography, they insert themselves on a local scale to expose narratives told by and for people, enriched by testimonials, stories, chronicles of ordinary and unofficial histories. These micro-narratives make up the murals, photomontages and photographic animations meticulously crafted by the artist duo using digital cameras to explore different semantics of the image. Since 1999, Patrick Dionne and Miki Gingras have been moving inland like migratory birds, crossing the continent in their legendary van and settling in different southern latitudes as the seasons go by. Nicaragua, Guatemala, Colombia and Mexico are all places where they have encountered diverse cultural realities and identities, which they integrate into their nomadic, cross-border artistic work. Participatory audiovisual strategies articulate the axis around which personal experiences, collective memories, political demands, environmental struggles, customs and habits converge to form an ethnography of everyday, neighborhood life. This photographic neo-muralism contributes to the dialogue between the cultural traditions of the South and the North, thanks to an intuitive approach in which the collective sense dominates the visual field.

Artwork description

Mémoire d’un paysage is composed of the shapes and textures of photographic images, sometimes symbolic for the mental representations they elicit, and sometimes metaphorical for the visual substitutions they suggest. The work creates a parallel between memory and transformation; the child and nature.
