Alex McLeod
1984

Alex McLeod creates dreamlike worlds inspired by digital culture. He is interested in the dynamics of simulation and representation of nature, and he draws on the visual repertoire of video games to build surreal landscapes that are abstract and distorted. Although they celebrate the potential of 3D modelling and animation, McLeod’s exuberant and critical universes invite us to reflect on how technologies influence our relationship with territory and the environment.

Artwork description

Both naturalistic and clearly unrealistic, Alex McLeod’s Morning calls to mind both the pastoral scenes painted by Claude Lorrain in the 17th century and the ultra-detailed worlds in today’s video games. McLeod transcends nature while romanticizing it. By deliberately using cone-shaped leaves in digitally enhanced colours, he shows the unlimited options new technologies offer. McLeod created two works exploring the same subject in different light: Morning and its counterpart, Evening.
