Christian Kiopini

Christian Kiopini defines his pictorial practice as a continuous, multiform experience of the space of painting. Since the mid-1970s, he has been working on a search based on the structural use of color in drawing, which brings him to redefine and characterize certain elements of pictoriality. Over the years, he has produced an important body of works, in which geometry (structures), objects (references) and color intertwine into a dimensional and chromatic versatility. That versatility of the elements is addressed in an elliptical mode that short-circuits any possible anecdote. During the last few years, he has been focusing on rereading and reclaiming phenomena and principles linked to circularity, while maintaining, in an open-minded perspective, the initial settings of his experimentations.

Born in Sorel in 1949, Christian Kiopini studied at École des beaux-arts and University du Québec, Montreal. Since 1971, he has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows in Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Quebec, Rimouski) and abroad (Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, (France), Hokkaido, (Japon), to name a few. In addition to belonging to numerous corporate and private collections, his works can be found in some of the most highly-regarded museums in Canada : Art Gallery of Ontario, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Fine Art Museum of Montreal and Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec Christian Kiopini is represented by galerie Graff since 2009. He lives and works in Montreal.
