Patrick Coutu, whose work focuses on structure, is fuelled by a desire to better understand how our environment—both natural and man-made—is constructed. He has recently been concentrating on mathematical models to explain the workings of natural creations, using simple equations and geometric shapes to produce complex end-results. His sculpture Vague is a fusion of both these interests, seeking to illustrate in mathematical terms how nature is ordered.
Inspired by the Golden Number ((1+ Ö5)/2, or 1.61803399…), which is widely found in both natural and human designs, Vague is constructed from two components (+ and – signs) that are constantly repeated to create the final form. Together, they form a sort of language within the sculpture itself, suggesting both upward and downward movements as well as horizontal motion. This bi-polar universe can be seen as an analogy for the economic system and its fluctuations.
