For Art Public Montr\u00e9al, the term \u201cpublic art\u201d refers to all works of art in public spaces, whether outdoors or indoors. The works are permanent and installed in common public areas. Public artworks are presented in more or less discrete ways, affirming their formal, conceptual or temporal characteristics. They can relate or not to their site, adapt harmoniously to their environment or contrast with it, depending on the artist\u2019s intention.<\/p>\n
Public artworks are found in places used either in passing or for meeting, such as public squares and parks, metro stations, cultural venues, educational institutions, government buildings, the headquarters and branches of companies, health care centres and even in sports and community facilities.<\/p>\n
Public artworks come from various arts disciplines (fine arts, decorative arts and design), employ a range of different materials and assume myriad forms: sculptures, installations, paintings, photographs, glass murals, mosaics, technological artwork and much more.<\/p>\n

Art Public Montr\u00e9al recognizes the artistic and cultural potential of mural artwork that enriches the urban landscape and makes art accessible in Montr\u00e9al neighbourhoods. These murals, on public and private infrastructure and walls, are produced by professional artists, recognized artist collectives and muralists. Some are considered essential destinations for people interested in discovering Montr\u00e9al\u2019s public art.<\/p>\n
In 2016, the Ville de Montr\u00e9al created a Mural Arts Program designed to beautify Montr\u00e9al\u2019s public spaces through the production of outdoor murals that are visible, creative and relate to their surrounding environment. The program consists of three components, each with its own particular objectives and evaluation criteria.
