{"id":62410,"date":"2017-02-24T12:04:08","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T16:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artpublicmontreal.ca\/en\/?p=62410"},"modified":"2017-02-24T12:04:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T16:04:08","slug":"art-souterrain-play-distraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artpublicmontreal.ca\/en\/2017\/02\/art-souterrain-play-distraction\/","title":{"rendered":"Art Souterrain \u2013 Play and Distraction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From March 4 through 26, 2017, the 9<sup>th<\/sup> edition of the contemporary art festival enhance Montr\u00e9al\u2019s Underground City.<\/p>\n<p>Festival-goers will discover works by 67 Qu\u00e9bec, Canadian and international artists and collectives, on display in nine buildings of Montreal&#8217;s Underground City and at seven satellite venues. 58 projects \u2013 installations, sculptures, performances, photographs, interactive videos with audio \u2013 put together to reflect this year&#8217;s theme, \u201cPlay and Distraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition trail, covering six kilometres, is marqued with floor signage directing pedestrians to the works. The tour <a href=\"https:\/\/artpublicmontreal.ca\/en\/parcours\/en-le-quartier-international\/\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Where the business world and art come together<\/em><\/span><\/a>, in the Quartier international de Montr\u00e9al, is a good starting point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the theme<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cHaving fun is a legitimate human need. But when do activities that foster genuine empowerment or reflection become exercises in alienation and regression instead? Have we developed a \u2018love for our servitude,\u2019 as Aldous Huxley surmised in Brave New World, allowing ourselves to be controlled, without coercion, by rules defined by others, and turning our backs on anything that requires patience and maturation? Does this perpetual quest for escape solely denounce a growing frustration with reality or is it redefining our very nature?
