An artist, author, and illustrator, Clément de Gaulejac was born in 1974 and has lived in Montreal since the early 2000s. His works have been exhibited at the Musée régional de Rimouski, Galerie UQO, Vox, centre de l’image contemporaine, Axenéo7, and the Skol contemporary art center. The author of numerous books, Clément de Gaulejac creates illustrations for newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses, and produces posters for social and political movements. In 2021, he was awarded a research grant from the Grantham Foundation for Art and the Environment. His aesthetic, poetic, and political practice explores the sometimes conflictual yet necessary dynamics of living together and shared understanding.

Maisonneuve Market
Artwork description
The work depicts a pair of bronze boots perched on a Saint-Marc stone pedestal, whose classical style is reminiscent of the former Maisonneuve City Hall. The boots are filled with water that ripples gently, occasionally spilling over the edges. About every five minutes, a thin vertical jet rises three feet above one of the boots for a few seconds, then falls back onto it, following the principle of “hoist by one’s own petard.” A new cycle then begins: a gentle bubbling… overflow… eruption… The simplicity of the boots’ aesthetic makes it easier for the neighborhood’s residents to connect with the artwork. However, behind this apparent simplicity, the work addresses numerous themes, including flooding caused by global warming, thereby raising several questions and inviting various interpretations.
