In 2002, AXE fell from the roof of a nine-story building and was hospitalized for the six months following his fall. He underwent several surgeries and had to go through motor rehabilitation treatments. The childlike bandage motif that appears in his work is a euphemistic evocation of this defining period in his life.Although he pursues music and dance with passion, his main activity remains visual art. His cartoonish style, influenced by comic books and the world of graffiti, developed over several decades of dedicated work. He practices mural art, but also paints on canvas and other less conventional surfaces such as pieces of cardboard and other found objects, as well as on digital media. Backed by several collaborations within urban art collectives, he has amassed hundreds of murals and various projects, several of which have left a mark on the collective imagination of Montrealers and tourists from all over the world. His contribution to the city’s cultural heritage is invaluable.
Artwork description
This artwork transforms the pillars of Highway 40 into a true outdoor art gallery in the heart of the Saint-Michel neighbourhood. Nineteen Montreal muralists created more than 40 colourful murals on the highway’s columns, sparking the revitalization of the area. This artistic gesture marks a strong visual milestone for the Circus Arts District and makes the space more welcoming for pedestrians and cyclists. Adding to this initiative is a citizen participation project: colourful paste-up collages, created by and for the Saint-Michel community as well as local paste-up artists, further enrich the route.
