2022
Cyrielle Tremblay

Cyrielle Tremblay builds dreamlike worlds where she tells stories of inner gardens where sometimes memory or poetry prevails, sometimes humor or absurdity. Between mural painting and more traditional mediums, her plastic and conceptual explorations also lead her to work on photography, installation and self-publishing. Artwork description

Produced by MU, this mural pays tribute to the Montreal free-thinker Éva Circé-Côté (1871–1949), the first librarian and curator of the Montreal Library, which was housed at the Monument-National in 1903; co-director of the first secular high school for girls, located just a stone’s throw from here; a journalist, essayist, playwright, poet, and musician.

As a feminist, Éva Circé-Côté campaigned her entire life for a progressive and inclusive society, one in which indifference toward Indigenous peoples and immigrants would not exist. For more than forty years, she worked for the emancipation of her people, striving to fuel public debate and raise awareness among her readers and listeners about various issues and the importance of social reforms, including the secularization of institutions and free, compulsory education.

This artwork highlights the invaluable contribution that this lover of literature and culture made to Quebec in the fields of education and culture, as well as in our journey toward a more just society, free from racial, gender, and religious prejudice.

Created by artist Cyrielle Tremblay, this mural invites viewers to get to know Éva Circé-Côté by showcasing her nuances and many facets.
