Artwork description

Titled Guerrilleras (Female Fighters), the mural pays tribute to women resistance fighters around the world. According to YUDA, the embrace between the two women symbolizes the protection, strength, and guidance of mothers. In creating the piece, the artist also drew inspiration from several elements of Mexican muralism.

This work highlights the social and political movement of resistance and identity. It is a tribute to the struggles for women’s rights around the world. It is also the result of the cultural and educational contributions of the Latin American diaspora, which has been present in Canada for over half a century.

“I am using muralism on this occasion to convey a contemporary message about the situation we women are experiencing, to denounce the violence we endure, and to defend the rights of all women around the world,” said Dolores Navarro as she explained her work.

This new piece of public art was created to celebrate the centennial of Mexican muralism, an artistic and social movement founded with the goal of democratizing art and making it accessible to the entire population. This movement depicts nationalist themes such as the Mexican Revolution, class struggle, and Indigenous peoples.
