Laurent Duvernay-Tardif

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, right guard for the Kansas City Chiefs, is the first active NFL player to have graduated as a medical doctor. His professional career path is so exceptional that the Kansas City Star, a U.S. daily paper, called him “the most interesting man in the NFL.”

Born in Mont St-Hilaire, Laurent is also very active with his foundation, created in 2017. Its objective is to promote a balance for young people among sports, arts and studies. The LDT Foundation is powered by the conviction that physical activity, like creativity, is a fundamental factor for school success in children.

An accomplished sportsman, medical graduate and arts lover, Laurent could be called a true Renaissance man!

I really admire the talent of our Québec artists and, even if I am a newcomer to contemporary art, I would like to share some of the feelings and thoughts their work inspires in me.

Here are my 5 top favourites in the Montréal public art collection.

Some of my other favourites:

  • Dendrite (Michel de Broin)
  • Havre (Linda Covit)
BGL
"I had the chance to discover the work of the BGL artists’ collective at the 56th Venice Biennale (which is akin to the Olympics for the arts), when they represented Canada. I love the closeness shared by this trio, who always provide surprising and playful concepts to illustrate their intent: whether an ecological comment or a critique of our society. To me, this iconic sculpture is a wonderful expression of the community-focused and avant-garde spirit of Montréal."
Nicolas Baier
"This piece, located at the McGill University Health Centre, the university where I completed my medical degree, speaks to both my passion for medicine and my curiosity for contemporary art. This amazing structure, comprised of thousands of spheres, is a synthesis of one of the building blocks of life. As I look up at this artwork, I like to imagine it was designed to remind us that sometimes we have to stop for a moment to take a novel look at what surrounds us. Raise your eyes to the sky, for example, and discover art in a place where you least expect it! "
Alain Paiement
"A regular at the Montréal airport because of my job in the United States, I have had all the time in the world to admire the details of Alain Paiement’s photographic montage. The subject and its aesthetic affect me greatly. Another of his creations, Bleu de Bleu (which stretches for 8 km along Autoroute 20 between the airport and downtown), also speaks to me. I find this a marvellous way to beautify a highway route, and the never-ending road repairs."
David Altmejd
"I believe this sculpture is a fine representation of the work of David Altmejd so it is an ideal entry into his fantastic universe. I am impressed by the way this artist is able to translate sensitive subjects such as death and eroticism through evocative materials, such as plaster, clay or a mirror. I love these half-human, half-animal characters that bring me to thoughts about the border between art and science. "
Michel Saulnier
"Children are very sensitive to art, perhaps even more than adults are. This is an idea that we try to reinforce at the Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Foundation. That’s why I really like artwork conceived and created as a function of youngsters who are full of potential. Here, “JE SUIS LÀ”, by Michel Saulnier is simple and yet so complex and detailed. It’s perfect for awakening a first love for art. "
