Josiane Lanthier
1989

Born in 1989, Josiane Lanthier lives and works in Baie-Saint-Paul. A painter since 2008, she holds a bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts, completed at UQAM in 2014.

“I paint and sew. I study color, texture and light. Craftsmanship is important. ”

In other words, Josiane Lanthier’s practice is primarily focused on landscape painting. It is characterized by an insatiable research into color, through which the artist is interested in its treatment, its function and especially the energy and impression of vivacity that emanate from certain combinations. In addition to the originality of their vivid colors, her canvases stand out for their treatment of light, the superimposition of different textures and materials, and the occasional emergence of surprising, almost ghostly shapes, adding a touch of dreaminess and poetry to the scenes depicted. Through these various processes, Josiane Lanthier questions our habitual perception of nature, as well as the traditional representation of landscape.

“I pick out the minority colors in landscapes and transpose most of them into a painting. ”

Her work can be found in the corporate collections of Scotiabank and Hilton Québec, as well as in a host of private collections in Canada, the United States, Germany, Denmark and Italy.

Artwork description

A permanent exhibition in the heart of Place Dupuis! This journey of 12 murals is designed as a walking art experience in Place Dupuis, in the heart of downtown Montreal. Composed of works by emerging artists, it is meant to be an artistic and collective adventure that offers visitors the chance to engage actively with art and discover new naturalist painting, exploring the relationship between humans and the natural environment. Bringing art to a place like this provides a real experience for the workers and citizens who pass by every day.

This initiative helps to encourage them to use this walkway, which then becomes an essential part of the downtown area, as well as providing access to art for all. It brings serenity; an unexpected feeling for a permanent visual art exhibition of “in-between places”, which shifts the gaze amidst a harmony of themes and colors.

This project was produced by MU as part of the “J’aime travailler au centre-ville” initiative, launched by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal (CCMM) with the support of the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie.
