With over twelve years of experience in the performing arts, director Félix Dagenais and lighting designer Louis-Xavier Gagnon-Lebrun founded ATOMIC3 to push their artistic development beyond the walls of the theatre, inventing new ways to tell stories and spark the imagination. ATOMIC3 is a multimedia design studio that creates unique immersive pieces of art where light, video, music, architecture, and new technologies plunge visitors into the heart of the story. Whether interactive or contemplative, ATOMIC3’s creations transform the public space to reach out to people in their daily lives. The works invite them to open up to others, work together, and see the world and their environment with new eyes. The founders’ rich and diverse performing arts experience informs their approach, bringing original narrative and poetic dimensions to their work.
Artwork description
Nuée de verre (Veil of Glass) is an interactive lighting installation consisting of a series of coloured, transparent triangular panels suspended from the ceiling of the international jetty. Functioning as a backbone that beckons travellers into the heart of the terminal space, it shines like an immense stained-glass jewel, with its components arranged from one end to the other of the space. The coloured panels animate the space, projecting their multi-hued reflections and refractions, aided by multiple light sources, onto the white ceiling of the terminal building, their progressive chromatic recalling the colours of the sky. The multiple sources and variations in intensity impart dynamism, transforming the ambience of the terminal through colours and movement keyed to the pace of human activity in the space. Thanks to motion detectors at the boarding gates as well as in the arrivals corridors, travellers’ movements activate the various light sources, modulating the play of coloured light on the ceiling. Evoking the movements of a flight of birds and recalling the city’s great stained-glass works, Nuée de verre energizes the new terminal space organically, providing both departing and arriving passengers with a one-of-a-kind experience.
