A multidisciplinary artist born in Manawan, Meky Ottawa uses video, illustration and installation as mediums to deal with topics specific to Aboriginal worlds. In 2016, she was chosen to participate in the NFB’s creative media arts laboratory, Déranger. Then, in 2017, she became known as part of the Montreal Aboriginal Museum’s LES ELISES aboriginal project with her immersive installation Kushapetshekan / Kosapitcikan – Épier l’autre monde, produced in collaboration with Eruoma Awashish and Jani Bellefleur-Kaltush.
Designed by emerging Atikamekw artist Meky Ottawa, the mural celebrates Ms. Obomsawin’s commitment to the defense of First Nations, and more specifically the rights and education of Aboriginal children.
This is the 20th of MU’s collection Montreal’s Great Artists, highlighting the creative minds and forces of those who have made outstanding contributions to Montreal’s cultural scene. It is also MU’s 4th mural in the Ville-Marie borough celebrating the heritage of Indigenous Peoples.
