Artwork description

The land that the Loyola campus currently occupies has been an anglophone Jesuit college, a French-Canadian family farm and before that, Mohawk territory. This sculpture pays homage to Iroquois heritage and the Mohawk Nation in particular. It is a twice life-size bronze work of two figures – a standing clan mother presenting a wampum belt to a seated chief and instructing him in the responsibilities he has been given by the women of the Nation. This work is positioned at a key intersection on the Loyola campus where the historic meets the contemporary, affirming links between native peoples and the Concordia community.
